Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT

Why do we need a mission statement? A mission statement helps us stay focused, helps us know when to say yes and when to say no, and a mission statement directs us to what is most important.

What is most important to God?

Jesus made it clear what is most important. He gave us the Great Commandments: “‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’” (Matthew 22:36-40)

Jesus also gave us the Great Commission: “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:16-20)

Over the last couple of years, we have been rediscovering our church’s history and purpose here in the South Bay. Through prayer, discussion, focus groups, help from gifted friends of Journey, God has led us to a new mission statement. Based on Jesus’ Great Commandments and Great Commission, the new mission statement of Journey of Faith is:

TO BRING GLORY TO GOD BY LOVING GOD, LOVING PEOPLE, AND MAKING DISCIPLES.

To those of you who call Journey of Faith your home church, thank you for your continued prayer, encouragement, generosity, and faithfulness to Jesus. May God grant us the grace, passion, and opportunity to live out this mission in all we say and do.

Core Values

OUR CORE VALUES: WELCOME. TRANSFORM. SERVE.

Welcome

Creating a safe and exciting environment to come as you are.
Jesus welcomed people throughout his life who were imperfect. He worked hard to remove religious, cultural, and political barriers that kept people away from him. People felt safe to come as they are; then he helped them become who they were supposed to be. People liked being around Jesus; he was safe but we shouldn't confuse safe with boring. When you were around Jesus, miracles happened, the Bible was taught in dramatic and powerful ways, and people were pushed out of their comfort zones to become who God made them to be. That is how we want to be in our worship services, children's and student ministries, small groups, and everything we do. At Journey of Faith, we’re not perfect; we’re forgiven sinners and we value creating safe and exciting environments for you to come as you are.

“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Matthew 9:13

Inviting everyone into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Jesus came to seek and save the lost and the Bible tells us that "the lost" means everyone. It says that we all sin and fall short of God's glory. We need forgiveness and new life. The Bible tells us that new life comes with having a personal relationship with Jesus. Journey of Faith has been part of the South Bay since 1911. We've grown with the South Bay. What was once a small beach community is now a thriving, multi-generational, multicultural population of close to 1 million people; the majority of whom don’t know Jesus personally. We love the South Bay, but more importantly, we know God loves the South Bay! At Journey of Faith, we value inviting everyone to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through our weekly services, local outreaches, and personal relationships.

“…the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." Luke 19:10

Transform

Being continually renewed and shaped by God’s Word.
We are all influenced by the things around us. Some people shape their lives around their family, their jobs, their health, or their hobbies. These are all great, but the Bible tells us that our lives should be shaped around God and God's Word. We believe that the Bible offers us God's absolute truth for living a successful life and how to experience a personal relationship with God that carries us into eternity. Every week in our Sunday services, children's ministries, student gatherings, and small groups, we encourage people to read and have their lives transformed by the truth found in the Bible. For over 100 years Journey of Faith has made the Bible the center of what we believe and do. We value being continually renewed and shaped by God's Word.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Romans 12:2

Raising up the next generation of Jesus-followers.
Children and students are not the future of the church, they are the church. Hundreds of churches shrink and close every year around the United States. Why? One reason is that they are not effectively empowering the next generation of Jesus-followers. In a relay race the most important time is when the baton is being passed. We believe in investing in our children and students, empowering and equipping parents to lead the way in their children’s spiritual growth, and giving our students the opportunities to find and use their spiritual gifts to serve a larger community. We want to intentionally find ways to worship, learn, and serve together. At Journey of Faith we value raising up the next generation of Jesus-followers.

“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4

Serve

Meeting the needs in our community and around the world.
Jesus was all about serving people. He healed people, comforted people, and fed people. He humbly met the needs of those around him and then sent his followers to do the same. We live in one of the most beautiful and desirable areas in the United States, but there are a lot of hurting people. Individually, through support and care groups, and through partnering with organizations in our communities, we want people to find hope, faith and love. But we also want to reach beyond our community by going on short-term mission trips and partnering with people around the globe who are meeting needs and sharing God’s love. Over 20% of our operating budget is dedicated to local and global outreach. Jesus was generous in serving, so we should be too. At Journey of Faith, we value meeting the needs in our community and around the world.

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12

Empowering others to live out Jesus’ unique calling for their lives.
The mission of welcoming, transforming, and serving is not the job of a select few; it is a mission for all of us. Each one of us has been called, gifted, and sent to impact the world with the love of Jesus in very unique ways. We want to help each person discover who God has made them to be, what God wants them to do, and how they can do it. Most of us are looking for meaning, value, and purpose in life. There’s nothing more exhilarating than being part of something bigger than ourselves – and there’s nothing bigger than Jesus’ mission. At Journey of Faith, we value empowering others to live out Jesus’ unique calling for their lives. How can we help you find your part in God’s Big Story?

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

What We Believe

WHAT WE BELIEVE

About the Bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s infallible and inerrant Word, written by men who were divinely and uniquely inspired, and that it is our supreme authority in all matters of faith and practice. We affirm our belief in the verbal and full, complete and absolute inspiration of the Scriptures in their original writings (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Jude 3).

About the Trinity

We believe in one God, creator and sustainer of all things, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that these are equal in every divine perfection and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption (Deuteronomy 6:4; Acts 5:3-4; 2 Corinthians 13:4; Ephesians 4:4-6; Hebrews 1:8; 1 Peter 1:2).

About God

We believe in God the Father, perfect in holiness, infinite in wisdom, and measureless in power. We rejoice that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, granting the right of the individual to directly approach Him in prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ (Genesis 1:1; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 1:3-6).

About Jesus Christ

We believe in the pre-eminence of Jesus Christ as our divine Lord and Master, true God and true man, God’s only begotten Son, born of a virgin, sinless in His life, who atoned for the sins of the world by His death on the cross. We believe in His bodily resurrection, His ascension into heaven, His High Priestly intercession for His people, and His personal, visible, premillenial return to the world according to His promise (Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:26-33; John 1:1-5, 14; Philippians 2:6-8; Colossians 2:8-9; Acts 1:9-11; 7:56; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Hebrews 1:3; Luke 12:40; ; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; Titus 2:13; 1 John 3:1-3).

About the Holy Spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit who was sent from God to convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, comfort, empower, and seal forever those who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that at the time of salvation, each believer in Christ is baptized by the Holy Spirit and becomes a member of the Body of Christ. Speaking in tongues is not a necessary evidence of baptism of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17; 16:7-11; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:9-12; Ephesians 1:13; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 14:22).

About Salvation

We believe that all men are sinners by nature and by choice, but that “God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal Life.” We believe, therefore, that those who accept Christ as Savior and Lord shall be forever in God’s presence and that those who reject Christ as Savior and Lord will be forever separated from God (John 3:1618; 36; Acts 16:31; Romans 3:23; 6:23).

About Church

We believe that the local church is to be composed of regenerated believers, voluntarily united together for the purpose of observing the two Scriptural ordinances of Baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper, the worship of God in fellowship of believers, and the proclamation of the gospel of Christ throughout the world. We believe in the complete interdependence in association with other like-minded churches, and the separation of church and state (Matthew 28:19; Luke 22:19-20; Acts 8:36- 39; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29).

About Unity

We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers, for which the Lord so earnestly prayed (John 17:20-21).

Our History

OUR HISTORY

Our journey began in 1911 with a small group of families wanting to share the love of Jesus in the beach cities of the South Bay. With relevant worship of the day, practical Bible teaching, and service in the community, the congregation grew out of their first two locations in Hermosa Beach and in 1957, they set their eyes on a location in Manhattan Beach which they called the “four acres of faith.” They envisioned raising up the next generation of Jesus-followers as they converted a school bus into a traveling Sunday school class for children in the area. Over 100 years later and multiple locations, our community of 30 families has grown to over 3,000 people calling Journey of Faith their home. We’re humbled and honored to be an important part of the Beach Cities history and excited to see what God has planned for the future!
